Tim’s session on critical thinking and analysis provides valuable skills development for new graduate business students enrolled in the GSBE Pre-Semester Program (PSP), a 5-day academic orientation program. As one of a series of workshops carefully sequenced to help students solve a case study, Tim’s session helps students improve their critical thinking and analysis skills – including the art of asking questions, reasoning, problem-solving and structuring an argument. It also provides students with practical examples of how they will be expected to use their critical thinking skills. Student feedback has been extremely positive and Tim has consistently achieved the highest rating for an individual PSP workshop. I have been impressed by the way that Tim has worked with me each semester to tailor the workshop to our specific needs and also to the way in which he has received feedback and committed to continuously improving each iteration of the workshop.

This class [Critical Thinking] was one of my favourites during this first mentor block with the Dame Nellie Melba Opera Trust (DNMOT). Dr Tim van Gelder was very professional when speaking to us about these interesting concepts such as the system one and system two brains. The theory is that our system one response is the primal automated response we have as animals whereas the system two brain brings into play intuition, intellect, analysis and feelings, and these are the things that can dictate how we as human beings respond to our original system one responses. During this session I found myself analyzing and challenging my own thought processes and their validity. I gained so much from this process and only wish there had been more time to explore this amazing skill further.
